Weak Suction - Westport, CT (2011)

Another improper installation at this house in Westport. The existing single-motor vacuum unit was not sufficient for this large house. It was undersized. Also, it was improperly installed. The exhaust should have been directed to the outside of the house, but instead it was instead blowing right back into the house. Dirt was literally coming in one end and blowing out the other. The entire utility room was covered with a thick coating of dust! What a mess!

We replaced the existing vacuum unit  with a dual-motor system that provided twice the power of the old system (525 air watts to 1,010 air watts). Not only is the new system twice as powerful, it is half as loud (76 decibels to 66 decibels (that is 1/2 as loud)) . It's so quiet that you could have a conversation standing right next to it.

1973 Pullman Holt Vacuum Unit - Redding, CT (2011)

In all of my years in this business, I have never seen this model before. It was installed in a house in Redding, CT in 1973. Back then it was almost unheard of.  It would have been extremely cutting edge. The homeowners might have brought friends and family to the basement to showoff their hightech machine.

When I arrived to check on a complaint of weak suction, I had to advise that it was time for an upgrade. I installed a new vacuum unit and ran an exhaust vent to the outside of the house. Also, I installed a  VacPan in the kitchen.

What a Mess! New Canaan, CT (2011)

A beautiful (6 yr old) house in New Canaan, CT had this twisted mess of a central vacuum in its basement. Firstly, the installation was extremely sloppy. Pipes were running at all kinds of angles. Secondly, the previous service person had cut pipes and used duct tape to mend them. Since there was not a proper seal of the pipes, dirt was escaping to the point where there was two inches of dust on every surface of this utility room! I also discovered a problem with the vacuum unit that had been there since it had been installed. In other words, it had never worked correctly from day one, yet serveral other service people who had been to the house (and charged the customer) had failed to notice the problem. The homeowner was so pleased with her new, and properly installed, central vacuum system that I thought she was going to kiss me!

Fix It Right the First Time. (2010)

        Central vacuum
I don't have an after picture for this one, but the before is great. This homeowner in Westchester County called me because her vacuum system had weak suction. After checking the system, I discovered a cracked pipe that a contractor had tried to repair with expanding foam! Needless to say, it didn't work. I had to replace the damaged pipe, and the problem was solved.

I should aslo mention that this was all hidden from view because it was inside of the wall. I had to cut the wall open in order to repair it properly. What would had cost a few dollars to do right the first time, now was a much more extensive repair.
